The Irish Universities Association (IUA) has joined 36 other higher education and research organisations from across the European Union and the United Kingdom in a joint declaration of cooperation on research and student exchange. All 37 pan-European organisations have signed the statement calling on governments across Europe for their continued commitment to the Erasmus+ and Horizon Europe programmes.
The UK’s participation in Horizon Europe and Erasmus+, which will both begin 1 January 2021, will be part of the negotiations between the UK and the EU. During this transition period the UK will remain a full member of the Erasmus+ and Horizon Europe programmes. The Irish Universities Association recognises the importance of the links between the United Kingdom and the European Union for academic and scientific cooperation and we have signed this declaration to underline the willingness of our seven universities to continue close collaboration with our nearest neighbours.
Jim Miley, Director General of the IUA said: “There are currently in excess of 500 active partnerships between Irish universities and those in the UK. It is critically important that these relationships are maintained into the future. Irish universities need to maintain the strongest possible links with their counterparts on the neighbouring island. This is vital to the advancement of Irish research and innovation and to continuing an active exchange of third level students.”
